Markham was founded in 1791 when John Graves Simcoe was appointed the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada. The first European settlement in Markham occurred when William Moll Berczy, a German artist and developer led a group of approximately sixty-four German families to North America. The strength of Markham’s growth has always been its diversity. As of 2016, Census Canada reported that the current population was 328,966 a 9% increase from 2011. As the population continues to grow, so does the diversity within the city.  The 2011 Census reported that 40% of the population indicated that their native language was English, while Chinese and South Asians were 32.9% and 11.6% respectively and 15.5% were a combination of all other languages. This is not at all shocking as Markham has one of the highest Asian populations in the province. This is largely due to the high-quality education that the city has to offer. The Asian community value education and with top schools like Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School and Sainte Marguerite Bourgeoys Elementary School, it is no wonder why Asian families are continuing to call Markham home. As the Asian community continues to grow, so do the amenities.  Markham is home to the largest Asian mall in the province. Pacific Mall which is located at Kennedy and Steeles features 450 shops and booths selling goods, herbs, Asian fashions, electronics, and toys. On the same grounds lies The Market Village. A Chinese shopping mall with over 170 stores selling Asian fashions, food, products and services.

ECONOMICS
Markham’s motivated, highly educated and ever-expanding population, is the driving force behind why 10,400 companies are based in Markham. With over 1,000 technology and life sciences companies operating out of Markham it has been named the high-tech capital of Canada. The City of Markham is home to over 400 Canadian head offices and attracts companies ranging from science and technology to design and engineering, as well as many other professional services. The city’s profile has benefited from several economic alliances and a frequent exchange of business missions to and from Asia, the USA and Europe.
