The days are drawing closer to when the residents of Markham will see the nearly 50-year old York Downs golf course go. Developers presented their initial plan to more than one hundred residents outlining how they will transform the old course into a sprawling community.
The proposed York Downs development will encompass 169 hectares and include a mix of single family homes and townhomes. More specifically, this includes 1,087 single detached homes, 597 townhomes, 151 stacked townhomes, 76 back to back townhomes, 300 mid-rise condominiums and 210 mixed use blocks.
There has been mixed reaction to the proposed plan. Some residents have commented that the plan does not consider the people living there, the people around them or the environment. The plan does have a proposed elementary school, a transit route with 24 stops and 43 hectares of dedicated greenspace, so it seems that the developers have thought of the people and environment.
The proposal is still in its initial stages, council will now review all the input from residents, the city, agencies etc. and consider any modifications to the plan. The next public meeting will take place on April 5 to discuss next steps.
