About Aurora

“You’re in Good Company” when living in the town of Aurora. It all began in 1793 when Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe gave the order for Yonge Street to be extended to Holland Landing. This was the first step toward establishing the community we now call Aurora. The town was the childhood home of Lester B. Pearson, Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, when his father, Rev. Edwin Pearson, was the Methodist minister.

Part of its history is St. Andrew’s College. Founded in 1899, it is the single largest all-boys boarding school in Canada. The 126-acre St. Andrew’s College campus houses many wonderful facilities for use by the students and the greater community. St. Andrew’s College is proud of its reputation as one of Canada’s leading private schools.

Aurora’s economy has continued to grow with the opening of the Hallgrove business park, the addition of the State Farm Insurance Head Office and the auto parts giant Magna International. With over 1,400 business and approximately 150 major industries and head offices, the town continues to be a destination for those who wish to live and work in the same community.

During the year Aurora hosts 2 music festivals. The Aurora Music Festival and the Aurora Winter Blues Festival.

The Aurora Music Festival is a single-day outdoor free music concert featuring a variety of bands on one main stage. This is a community event that helps cultivate Aurora’s music network and benefits local charities. The Aurora Summer Music Festival features a variety of youth, local and new music acts. The event is organized and presented by a volunteer committee and funded by local businesses.

Now in its 8thyear, the Aurora Winter Blues Festival is York Region’s only genuine Blues Festival where you can experience an upfront and intimate evening with Canada’s best live blues acts.

Keeping to its roots is an important part of the town of Aurora. The town has maintained its cultural heritage so well that in 2008 Aurora was awarded the Prince of Wales prize for municipal heritage leadership for preserving its historical buildings. In 2009 the town received the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership in heritage conservation and promotion.
