Markham is Canada’s most diverse community. The demographic population, when broken down by ethnic origins, include Chinese, Canadian, English, East Indian, and smaller numbers of Scottish, Irish, Italian, and Jewish residents.

The City of Markham is deep in history. The township was named after William Markham, Archbishop of York. Markham’s history dates back to the late 18th century when William Berczy first settled in the area along with several German families. Many of these families, however, moved to Toronto as a result of the lack of roads in Markham.

In the early 1800s, Joseph Reesor bought land at Hwy 48 and Hwy 7 and settled along with several Pennsylvania German families, many of whom were skilled craftsmen. The area, known as Reesorville and later Mannheim became known as Markham in 1825. Markham was incorporated as a town in 1972. The construction of Hwy 404, which was built in the 1970s, resulted in greater accessibility and increased intensification of the Town of Markham. The Town of Markham became an official city on July 1, 2012.

The City of Markham not only offers a look to the past but also a look to the future. Markham is recognized as Canada’s High-Tech Capital anchored by 1,500+ technology companies that generate 37,000 jobs. Defined by its rich heritage, well-planned communities, high-quality infrastructure, a talented workforce, and a pro-business environment, Markham’s business community includes outstanding companies and organizations providing globally competitive banking, financing, engineering, design, technical, and commercialization services.

Of the 10,400 companies in Markham, there is a high concentration of Canadian head offices located here – including industry leaders such as IBM, AMD, Redline Communications, Real Matters, OnX Enterprise Solutions, Huawei Technologies, Nightingale Informatix, Lenovo, GE Energy, Nexeya, Toshiba, Adastra, CDI, Qualcomm, and Genesys.

Markham is home to a leading community hospital. Markham Stouffville Hospital is equipped with 329 beds and provides diagnostic and emergency services. The hospital also delivers clinical programs in acute care medicine and surgery, addictions and mental health, and childbirth and children’s services. Partnering with other specialist providers, the hospital’s 500 physicians, 23 midwives, over 2,300 staff and nearly 1,300 volunteers make it the centre of community care for the residents of the City of Markham, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville and the Township of Uxbridge.

The City of Markham also has the honour of having one of Canada’s oldest county fairs. The Markham Fair, which first originated in 1844, occurs annually on the weekend before Thanksgiving and hosts upwards of 60,000 attendees. Approximately 3,000 exhibitors will enter more than 10,000 items, which will be judged and put on display during the fair. As well as the competitive displays of our fall harvest, the community is further brought together to enjoy various forms of entertainment such as a horse pull, demolition derby, tractor pull, midway rides, livestock shows and displays of farm animals.
