GO Buses travel from Unionville to Toronto and back when trains are not running. The Unionville GO Station, connects to York Region Transit, which operates buses along the main streets in Unionville. The 302 Unionville Express route runs along Hwy 7 and ends at the Finch subway station.

Festivals

During the winter, Unionville residents can be transported to a different time at the Olde Tyme Christmas and Candlelight Parade that takes place the first weekend in December. Visitors can enjoy free horse and carriage rides, strolling carollers and streets adorned with street lamps. The Candlelight Parade takes place on Friday evening, culminating in an appearance by Santa Claus and Christmas tree lighting at the Millenium Bandstand. On Saturday and Sunday morning, kids can have breakfast with Santa.

The Unity Festival at the Millenium Bandstand and Varley Art Gallery, which takes place in July, celebrates the many different cultures that define the City of Markham. The two-day festival is held one day on Main Street in Unionville and one day on Main Street in Markham.

Historic Buildings in Unionville The Stiver Mill, built in the early 1900s next to the train station, was the home of the Stiver Coal and Seed Company. After being vacant for four decades, the City of Markham purchased the mill in 1993 with a goal of restoring the property to increase activity at the south end of Main Street. Currently, the Stiver Mill Farmers’ Market operates on site annually until Thanksgiving weekend. The Old Firehall Confectionary at 170 Main Street started off as a farm tools dealership in 1930 and later became Unionville Fire Hall. A later renovation in the 1980s saw the building converted to a sporting goods store. The current candy business embraces the building’s varied history. The Unionville Planing Mill at 139 Main Street, which is now a shopping complex, was originally a saw mill built by Ira White in 1839. The saw mill changed ownership until it was purchased in 1881 by Robert Harrington whose family kept the mill in operation until 1960. Two subsequent fires in the 1978 and 1983 destroyed the building, which was later reconstructed in 1987 to reflect its original features. The Heritage Schoolhouse at 21 Renfrew Rd. collects artefacts and materials related to the history of schools in the town and the York Region District School Board as far back at the 1850s. Unionville Churches The Old Unionville Congregational Church at 150 Main Street was built in the Picturesque style by E.J. Lennox, architect of Casa Loma, in 1879. The church was purchased by the Presbyterian Church and later converted to the local Veterans’ Hall. Names of WWII veterans are carved into the church’s steeple. The Central United Church at 131 Main Street was founded by the Methodist congregation in 1840. The church, built in Gothic revival style, features stained glass, a pointed archway, a spire and a vertical focus. The sanctuary was added in 1879 and the church underwent a renovation in 1986. The Village Church, built in the Gothic Revival architectural style and now at 218 Main Street in Unionville, began in 1794 as St. Philip’s Anglican Church to serve the early settlers in Berczy Village, which surrounded the church. In the early 1900s, the railway was built and the town sprung up, creating a need to relocate the church to Main Street and Carlton Road. The church was not only relocated, but was rebuilt to reposition the tower with spire to the side of the building, increase the pitch of the gable roof and reframe the structure in brick. The Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church began as a place of worship for German Lutheran families, who had originally settled in Upstate New York in 1794. Originally built on Kennedy Rd. just north of 16th Ave. In 1861, due to community development near the new railroad, the church was relocated and rebuilt in its present location in 1910. In 1990, the church underwent a renovation to add additional space.
